candle chandelier

A Candle chandelier is just what it sounds like. It is the name given to chandeliers that use candles in the place of light bulbs to provide illumination. They are available in just about any style and material. They are often made of wrought iron, which adds a very bold style to the room. Some of the more simple ones are designed to hold a single votive candle. Still others are elaborate, and will work a multitude of candle holders into their design.

There are types of chandeliers where the light is a small bulb placed in what looks very much like the hood of an oil lamp or candle holder. This is a modern attempt to copy the look and style of the candle chandelier while at the same time eliminating the need for both lighting and extinguishing the flame on a real candle. Some purists would claim they do not fit the definition of candle chandelier because they do not use real candles, but when the term is used more to describe style rather than function, it is correct for the modern electric one as well.

The candle chandelier was the most common early style of chandelier mainly because candles provided the only source of light prior to the advent of the electric light bulb. Today their use is mainly to provide a more romantic ambiance to the décor of a room. Often placed above a dining table, they make an overhead lit candle light dinner. The use of candles is mostly being replaced by light bulbs largely because of the trouble of lighting, and the risk of fire.
