Although in the past chandeliers were made of a wide variety of materials many of them natural such as wood and animal antlers, metal has become the most popular material in most contemporary chandeliers. A problem of chandeliers has always been the weight of them, and the problems associated with hanging them from the ceiling. There is such a wide variety of light weight metal alloys available today that this problem is greatly eased.
Another advantage of metal chandeliers is that the light weight metals are easily made as hollow tubes that allow the wiring to be placed inside the arm of the chandelier out of sight. The wires run from the junction box inside the ceiling, through the hanging portion of the chandelier and into each individual light socket without distracting from the look of the chandelier. A dimmer switch added to the circuit can produce an added attraction to the chandelier.
The light weight of modern metal allows for a return to the large and elaborate chandelier that was popular in the past, but was restricted to large building and palaces. The modern home can have one of these classic designs in a foyer, or dinning room now without much worry about the roof collapsing. There are a large variety of styles available as well. Just about any décor at all can be highlighted by a chandelier made of metal. The combination of lighter weight and strength of metal will insure that metal chandeliers remain the first choice of decorators in the future.
