A shell chandelier is basically a hanging light fixture that is made of shells. This style is used in a variety of decorating motifs with the most popular being the nautical style. There are actually quite a few styles of shell chandeliers that can be used in a beach house, or a home with a beach theme.
One style is known as the Capiz Shell Chandelier. It consists of smooth cut shells in a round, tiered, square, or a unique style known as the Venice Beach. They are usually attached by clear strands to give the appearance of floating in the air. Backed usually by lower wattage bulbs, the shells emit a warm glow to the room rather than providing bright lightening.
Another popular style that is a bit more vibrant is made with large shells allowing brighter lights. This style is often accented with pieces of corral. Some varieties come with small shell covered shades over the light bulbs.
Of all the various styles of chandeliers, the shell chandelier is one of the least functional, and more decorative examples. Although mostly used in beach and nautical themes, it is not restricted to these. The Capiz variety can be a very expensive and elegant addition to the most formal room. If your purpose is a source of strong overhead light, the shell chandelier is most likely not going to be the best choice. If you are more concerned with the decorative value of the fixture, however, the shell chandelier certainly deserves some consideration.
